2019/04/26

On  April 14th, Consul General Huang Ping and his wife Zhang Aiping met with Max Hollein, the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the two sides exchanged views on further strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of culture and museology. Cultural Counsellor Li Liyan, Maxwell K.Hearn, Chairman of the MET's Asian Art Department, and Jason Sun, Deputy Chairman of the MET's Asian Art Department, attended the meeting.

As Huang Ping said, in the six months since he took office, he has visited ten states in the consulate region and felt the significant role of people-to-people exchanges in promoting China-US friendship. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must for almost every visitor to New York. In the museum, they can not only learn about the history and culture of China but also appreciate the art treasures of various countries in the world. In other words, multi-culture is integrated and symbiotic here. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the United States. It requires the two sides to deepen mutual understanding and trust to develop a healthy and stable China-US relationship. The MET's collection spans 5,000 years of Chinese history and provides an excellent opportunity for people of the United States and other countries to learn more about China. We wish that the MET could continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China, explain China's concept of "harmonious but different" to the world through culture and cultural relics, so as to promote win-win cooperation between China and the United States while resolving conflicts.

Max Hollein welcomed Huang Ping and his delegation's visit, saying that the MET has always valued its relationship with China. According to statistics, Chinese visitors are now the second largest group of overseas visitors to the museum, and the number is still growing rapidly. It is believed that it will be promoted to first place within a few years. At the same time, the MET is also the cultural institution which has the most frequent exchange and cooperation with China's cultural and museum institutions among the world. Aiming at embracing the world's culture and serving the world's audience, the MET would like to take advantage of its rich collection resources, to build a platform for dialogue among civilizations all over the world, and to promote mutual understanding and recognition between people of China and the United States.

After the meeting, Jason Sun accompanied Huang Ping and his delegation to visit part of the permanent exhibitions in the Asian Art Department, temporary exhibitions like "Good Luck in the Pig's Year" and "Endless Xishan Mountain" as well as "Ming Xuan", a Chinese Suzhou-style garden in the museum.

Founded in 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the most famous museums in the world. At present, the main building of the museum covers an area of nearly 200,000 square meters, with more than 200 exhibition halls and a collection of more than 3 million pieces. In recent years, it successfully held a number of China-themed exhibitions like "China: Through the Looking Glass", "Masterpieces of Chinese Painting from The MET Collection", and "Age of Empires: Chinese Art of the Qin and Han Dynasties".
